Terms & conditions

Conditions of Sale

All sales are conducted on our printed Conditions of Sale. As auctioneers we usually contract as agents for the seller, whose identity, for reasons of confidentiality, is not normally disclosed. By registering to bid you accept these conditions.

Buyer’s premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 25% plus VAT at the rate imposed by law. Buyers using live internet bidding pay an additional premium as stated by the platform chosen. Lots marked (*) carry VAT at the standard rate on the hammer price as well as the premium; lots marked (**) carry import VAT at the reduced rate (5%) on the hammer price and premium. Other lots are sold under the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme.

Estimates

Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium or VAT. The lower estimate may represent the reserve price and certainly will not be below it. Estimates may be altered by announcement before the sale and are in no sense definitive.

Condition

Intending buyers have ample opportunity for inspection and accept responsibility for inspecting and investigating lots. Neither the seller nor the auctioneer accepts responsibility for condition; mechanical objects of any age are not guaranteed to be in working order. Electrical goods are sold as ‘antiques’ only and must be checked by a qualified electrician before use. Lots shown to be deliberate forgeries may be returned within 3 weeks.

Bidding

Bidders must register before the sale and two forms of identification will be required if you are unknown to us. Bidding increments are at the auctioneer’s discretion. Commission bids are executed as cheaply as possible having regard to the reserve and competing bids; if two identical commission bids are received the first may be preferred.

Payment

Successful buyers will be emailed their invoice. Our preferred method of payment is bank transfer; debit card and cash up to £9,000 are also accepted. Cheques are not accepted. Ownership does not pass until payment has been made in full.

Collection & storage

Lots must be paid for and removed at your own risk and expense not later than 3 working days following the day of the auction, after which you are responsible for any removal, storage and insurance charges. Interest of up to 1.5% per month may be charged on sums unpaid more than 3 working days after the sale.

Export

Buyers intending to export goods should check whether an export licence is required and whether there is any prohibition on importing goods of that character (for example, items containing ivory). Ask us if you need help.
