Buying

Buying at a Charterhouse auction is a very simple process.

Ways to bid

  1. Bid online — bid live while the auction is taking place, listening to the auctioneer and watching them sell, or leave bids online once the catalogue is available, from two weeks before the sale.
  2. Bid in person — come along, view the lots, speak to our helpful and friendly staff, register with the accounts department and stay to bid.
  3. Commission bid — come along to view, tell us how much you want to bid up to, and we will do it for you.
  4. Telephone bid — where the lower estimate is more than £100 and staff are available. We ask for a covering bid.

Identification

If you come in person please bring two forms of identification — ideally a driving licence, and a debit card that you can also pay with. We need proof of who you are and where you live, and we keep copies securely to demonstrate due diligence in relation to money laundering.

What we charge

We charge the hammer price of the lot plus a buyer’s premium of 25% of the hammer price. On top of that we charge 20% VAT on the premium only, not the hammer price, so the premium and the VAT together are an extra 30% on top of the hammer price in total. Full charges are in our terms and conditions.

We aim to make the whole process of buying transparent and easy. Please be aware that bidding creates a legally binding contract — make sure you are happy about what you are bidding on, and we will do the rest.
